John Spainhour is an honors graduate of the Ashville School, the University of the South, and Vanderbilt Law School. He has practiced law in Shepherdsville since 1976. He is a Phi Beta Kappa and honors graduate at the University of the South and served as Director of the Student Legal Aid Society at Vanderbilt.

He has held professional and public offices as City Attorney for Hunters Hollow, Assistant Bullitt County Attorney and Chief Assistant Bullitt County Attorney. He also served as a Bullitt County Public Defender and Chief Public Defender.

He is a member of the Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisville, Bullitt County (President, 2001-2002) and American Bar Associations and the Kentucky Justice Association (Member, Board of Governors, 1986 to 2006) and the American Trial Lawyers Association. He is a life fellow of the Kentucy Bar Foundation. He is named as one of the 100 best trial lawyers in Kentucky by the American Trial Lawyers Association and listed in Best Lawyers in Louisville.

He maintains an active personal injury, real estate, estate planning, Social Security, banking, corporate law and general trial and appellate practice.

In addition to his professional work he has served on a number of charitable and educational boards. He was a member and board chair of the Meredith-Dunn School and Board member of the Legal Aid Society of Louisville. He is House Corporation president for Delta Tau Delta fraternity at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He also has acted as attorney for various churches; the Bullitt County Public Libraries and other community groups.  He was named to Bullitt County Court Appointed Special Advocates as a member of the Hall of Fame and awarded the "Face of CASA" recognition by the Kentucky CASA organization in 2011.

His practice recently embraced a number of high profile cases including Victor's Little Secret v. Victoria's Secret in the U.S. Supreme Court and Commonwealth of Kentucky v. David 'Bucky' Brooks where he obtained a dismissal of capital murder charges.

He successfully appeared as amicus curiae in the Supreme Court of Kentucky on three occasions and has been involved in the successful presentation of a number of precedent making appellate decisions.
